Gamo Singers (ET)

The Gamo are a tribe from the south of Ethiopia. Some of the oldest fossils of mankind were found here at the lower course of River Omo, scientists date the archaeological findings back to 200.000 years ago.

Many of the Gamo today live in the capital Addis Abeba where they inhabit their own quarter. They commute and bring goods from their homeland to the city. Singing is very important in their culture. The beautiful harmonies are accompanied by percussive sounds. Modern Gamo musicians built instruments from plastic bottles. Melaku Belay connected the Gamo Singers with other Ethiopian musicians already ten years ago. Up until today they maintain their good connection and enhance their art.
