ELEW Trio (US)
ELEW is the stage name of crossover pianist Eric Lewis. ELEW is well known for his unconventional and kinetic performance style – he jumps up from the piano stool, accosts the strings inside the corpus and throws himself against the piano. He coined the term “rockjazz” to describe his musical style, a genre that takes the improvisatory component from jazz and “threads it through the eye of the needle of rock”.
Eric Lewis won the 1999 edition of the Thelonious Monk Competition; he has worked as a sideman for jazz greats such as Wynton Marsalis, Cassandra Wilson and Elvin Jones and has been a member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. In his solo career as ELEW, he incorporates influences from rock music into his piano playing and has drawn attention for his cover versions of songs like the Rolling Stones’ “Paint it Black”. He has appeared on America’s Got Talent and performed at the White House for Michelle and Barack Obama.
At moers festival, ELEW will be hitting the stage with his New York based trio configuration founded in 2017 featuring bass and drums. In this fresh context, he has turned his attention to sounds that recall the early phase of his career without however losing touch with his trademark rockjazz vision.
