Wolfgang Seifen (DE)

Filmmusic "Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari"

Wolfgang Seifen (church organ)

Ev. Stadtkirche Moers

Friday is Film Club night! The organ virtuoso, composer, and titular organist of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin, Wolfgang Seifen, has strong ties to the Lower Rhine region, having worked in Nettetal in earlier years and later for a long time at the Marienbasilika in Kevelaer. But above all, he shares with the Moers Festival one great passion: the love of improvisation. He frequently collaborates with exciting musicians. Last summer, those in the know had the chance to see him perform with the Moersian Improviser in Residence 2022, Tomeka Reid, at St. Josef Church. For the 52nd Moers Festival, Wolfgang Seifen will improvise to an absolute classic of silent film history: the expressionistic and obscure images of Robert Wiene's masterpiece The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari from 1920 still resonate after more than 100 years and, in a striking way (likely to be amplified by Seifen's music), feel urgently relevant: a world in deep depression, tyranny everywhere, opium for the masses, and sleepwalking changes in society... spine-chilling!
