Koshiro Hino: Chronograffiti (JP)

Premiere - Commissioned by the moers festival

Tsuyoshi Maede (perc), Kanna Taniguchi (perc), Tomo Ando (perc), Ken Furudate (visuals)

“Chronograffiti” features a rhythm ensemble of three percussionists: Tsuyoshi Maeda, formerly of the renowned taiko performing arts group Kodo; Tomo Ando, winner of first prize in the percussion division of the Japan Wind and Percussion Competition; and Kanna Taniguchi, a frequent performer of Koshiro Hino’s works.

Hino has developed his own unique compositional approach to rhythm through projects such as his experimental band goat and his ongoing collaborations with Kodo. In this work, he explores the ecstatic potential of minimalism by using the most minimal of instruments - such as bongos and snares - to generate intense physical and psychological effects. The piece also incorporates visual effects by Ken Furudate, known for his work with Sine Wave Orchestra and Dumbtype, who visualizes the physical “afterimages” of the performers' movements, creating a synesthetic experience that merges sound and vision.

The title “Chronograffiti” is a coined word combining “Chrono” (a prefix related to time) and “Graffiti,” suggesting a kind of temporal trace—an ephemeral scribble drawn in the air by the moving body through time and space.
