Flugflügel

No one remembers why they wanted to fly. But everyone still knows how close the light is. For three days and nights, people live out the same destiny. They all strive toward the light; they glow; they burn. Composed by Gellért Szabó, commissioned by the Moers Festival 2026.
Gellért Szabó’s Ideal Orchestra is the opulent 23-piece improvisational orchestra from Leipzig, in which large-scale compositions and spontaneously formed collective processes intertwine. Under the direction of composer and conductor Gellért Szabó, expansive soundscapes spanning jazz, contemporary music, and sacred drama emerge in real time. Critics describe Szabó’s music as shaped by the pathos tradition of Western art music—tragic and uplifting, of monumental scale, yet with a dramaturgy in which every note carries weight. The extraordinary intensity of the performance makes concerts by the Ideal Orchestra a thrilling experience.
For the 55th Moers Festival, the Ideal Orchestra presents a new large-scale work, a fairy-tale opera in three parts. Over three consecutive days, a continuous work unfolds, blending composition, collective improvisation, and visual elements, culminating in a grand final performance.
