Dima, 16, is the son of Russian immigrants, a high school student — and he is Jewish. That wouldn’t normally be worth mentioning, if people didn’t keep talking about it all the time. Including his classmate Tobi.
One day, Tobi provokes him in the school bathroom with an antisemitic joke about the fate of Jews in Germany. Dima could ignore it, but he doesn’t feel like letting it slide — so he punches Tobi in the face. The result: expulsion from school.
The expulsion comes with one condition: Dima must apologize to Tobi. His journey to find him turns into a fast-paced road trip through the city and through a series of encounters with people who all have their own opinions about Jews, Judaism, and what they consider worth mentioning. From naive philosemitism and ignorance to Zionism and antisemitism, Dima experiences in fast-forward what is thought and said — openly or quietly — about Jewish life in Germany.
In the end, he unexpectedly runs into Tobi again, and once more they talk about Jews. This time, things might turn out alright.
