György Kurtág’s “Kafka Fragments” (1985–1987) for soprano and violin is a cycle of short musical settings of texts from Franz Kafka’s diaries and letters. These miniatures are extremely condensed: often consisting of just a few notes or musical gestures lasting only a few seconds, they closely interweave text and sound.
