Bart Maris was born in 1965 and lives in Ghent, Belgium. The jazz trumpeter appears in numerous projects and formations in the alternative music scene and plays in unconventional line-ups that bring together musicians from completely different backgrounds.
Maris is also active solo - often with Moogerfoogers and a loop machine or a complete tape recorder installation (Loops) - the latter was on show at Peschkenhaus in 2018. He plays in the duos Krommekeer (with Lode Vercampt, cello) and GLITS (with Peter Vandenberghe, piano), purely acoustically with coloratura soprano Sylvie Depauw or in a duo with sand organ (Sonitum Horarium).
In 2013, he took part in the piece “Toutes les memes” by Stromae and is a permanent member of the worldroots band Jaune Toujours. As a visiting professor, Maris teaches improvised music at the Ghent Conservatory. He has been organizing weekly improv nights at Hotclub de Gand, Ghent, for over 15 years.
Maris was awarded the Zamu Prize for Best Belgian Musician in 1999, nominated for the Paul Ackett Prize in 2006, won the SABAM Jazz Prize “Gevestigde Waarde” in 2015 and the Culture Prize of the City of Ghent in 2021.
